______HISTORY OF THE GIBEON METEORITES______

The Gibeon meteorites come from broken asteroid fragments or an exploded star and possibly the planet Mars. Gibeon is one of the most well known meteorites and is classified as a fine octahedrite (17.0 MM) Type IVA. On average the composition is 90% Iron and 8% Nickel with minor amounts of Cobalt and Phosphorus. There are a number of scarce minerals found in it, including Kamacite, Taenite, Triolite, Chromite and Daubreelite. Scientists have also found rare minerals called Enstatite and Tridymite. These minerals are only found in nuclear fission. Some of the Gibeon fragments have also yielded silicate inclusions. This meteorite from Grand Namaquland, Namibia, Africa fell during prehistoric times and was first (scientifically) discovered during 1836, by the English army captain and explorer Sir James E. Alexander. The Gibeon meteorite appears to have broken high in the atmosphere as pieces of it are found scattered over an area of about 16,100 square miles. The Gibeon strewn field exceeds 40 miles wide and 250 miles long making this the largest meteor strewn fields found on Earth. Scientists believe that the meteorite entered the atmosphere at a 30 degree angle. Most of the fragments of this meteorite were found on top of the ground. To date, no craters have been found. Larger pieces of this meteorite are common with smaller fragments being fairly scarce. Radiometric dating places the metal in this meteorite at 4 Billion years old with the earth being 4.5 Billion years old. The meteorite was known by the local Namaquas for many years before its discovery in 1836, who had worked the smaller specimens into tools, arrowheads and assagai-heads. The locals reported to Alexander the occurrence of a large mass of native iron masses 2-feet square. The location was three days journey, time which Alexander did not have, so he was unable to view the masses himself, he was able to obtain some samples for analysis. Lines and patterns are the result of cooling in outer space over billions of years. The crosshatched lines are acid etched and show lines in the meteorite called Widmanstatten lines. These are the results of crystal growth of the acid reacting different to the high nickel taenite and low nickel kamacite crystals. Gibeon's main composition is iron (90%), nickel (8%) and cobalt (0.4%). Other minerals include kamacite, taenite, troilite, chromite, deabreelite, enstatite and tridymite. Radiometric dating places the age of crystallization of the metal of the Gibeon meteorite at around 4 billion years. More then 54 tons of this meteorite is in museums or university collections. The largest, weighs 650 kilograms or 1,430 pounds, and is located at the South African Museum in Cape Town.

______MORE HISTORY______

This robust Gibeon meteorite sphere is compelling from any angle, in any orientation and effortlessly evokes the sense of awe and wonder befitting Gibeon iron meteorites. Irons are extremely dense and this sphere will feel very heavy for it's size. As it entered the Earth's atmosphere at 7 to 18 miles per SECOND, intense changes happen to the internal structure. The interior of an iron meteorite reveals a striking etched display of a Gibeon meteorite's entrancing octahedral crystalline structure. Iron meteorites are one of the most durable and easiest to recognize of all meteorites, but only one in ten meteorites that fall from the sky are of the iron variety. The other 90% are stone meteorites. Iron meteorites are fragments of the once-molten metal core of an asteroid or demolished moon, probably from the asteroid belt. As these moons cooled, their cores crystallized and through later collisions, were destroyed. These crystal growths cannot be faked here on earth, as they require a cooling rate of perhaps just 1 degree celsius [33F] per million years ! They arrived later from outer space as your basic cosmic cannon balls. This piece has been sanded, polished and etched. A lot of extremely valuable meteorite material is lost is grinding this specimen into a sphere shape. Export has been banned by the Namibian government.

______WIDMANSTATTEN______

THIS CROSSHATCHING PATTERN IS UNIQUE TO THESE METEORITES AND WAS FORMED AS THE METALLIC ELEMENTS CRYSTALLIZED AT AN ESTIMATED COOLING RATE OF LESS THEN 1 DEGREE PER EVERY THOUSAND YEARS.
